I had initially written what I thought about the movie on Thursday night but I was too pissed off over the seats I had to write a favorable review.
Now that it's been three days and I have seen it again this morning; I feel I can say what I should have said the first time.
For one thing, there weren't any teenyboppers at the ten a.m. showing which was really nice. I was able to get a good seat in the back to see the thirty foot screen without straining my neck or getting nauseated from sitting so close.
I went alone because I needed to be one with my emotions. I know that sounds kind of crazy but this book has some of the lowest points in the series and I didn't want to fucking cry in front of anyone.
Anyway, I really liked how it began with Bella's dream/nightmare about her growing old with Edward. She's in the meadow and sees her "Gran." Or so she thinks, Edward walks out from the trees wearing a ridiculous Butler's coat but as soon as he walks out in the sun, his skin sparkles like diamonds. The f/x in this movie is much better, the way Edward's skin glows is great, and it makes him look ethereal. Also the CGI wolves are pretty cool to look at.
My favorite parts were as follows:
- The Break up scene was written and acted beautifully. My favorite song was playing during this tortuous scene; Roslyn. It really fit the scene and the mood, especially knowing what Edward was about to do. I'm so glad Rob and Kristen re-wrote it because I'm sure the dialogue MR wrote was dreadful.
- Bella trying in vain to run after Edward in the woods was heartbreaking. She trips on a rock or tree limb and falls to the ground in defeat. I don't blame her there; Edward crushed her like a bag of rocks.
- They showed Edward in Bella's bedroom removing all the pictures of him but didn't show Bella finding out her stuff had been removed and her breakdown over that.
- Bella's friendship with Jacob is what pulled her out of the black hole she was in. I'm not really a fan of his; but Taylor Lautner really did a good job as Jake.
- The rest of the wolf pack; Sam and Paul in particular were great to watch. They didn't have a lot of lines but they made the middle part of the movie without Edward more interesting.
- I like action in a movie so when Bella slaps Paul and he gets so pissed off he morphs into a wolf was fun to watch. Jacob wakes up from his nap and unknown to Bella; he morphs into a wolf and subsequently fights with Paul. I liked watching that because even though they are a pack it showed they don't always get along.
- Ok I skipped ahead a little bit so let me back track to Bella post-breakup. When they showed her sitting in her room staring out the window watching the seasons change that killed me. Her facial expression said it all; she was dead inside without Edward. Then my favorite song on the soundtrack started playing, Possibility, and I fucking lost my mind. I mean I started crying, I couldn't help it. I'm not one to cry like a baby but that song really gets to me. Especially seeing how Bella is so despondent, I can relate to that sometimes.
- Victoria. I fucking love her and the actress that plays her, Rachelle Lafevre. She didn't have any dialogue (!) but after seeing the movie again I don't think she needed to. Her actions spoke louder than words could have. She was phenomenal as Victoria. The sequence of her running through the woods at break-neck pace was fantastic. I can't remember which song was playing but when I heard it and saw her flying through the air and out-running the entire wolf pack I was crying again! I don't know why that scene made me so emotional but it was beautiful to watch. Then she took a flying leap off the cliffs and dove into the water below, I felt so proud; Rachelle is the only Victoria in my eyes. She nailed it in the few scenes she had. I'm still sad and pissed that Rachelle was fired from Eclipse; she would have rocked it in her final turn as Victoria.
- Bella's cliff dive of insanity. That's how I can describe what she was doing, or how it was said in the movie, recreational purposes. Right before she jumped, Edward appeared as an apparition and told her not to do it. Bella jumped anyway and she got pummeled repeatedly by wave after wave. She went under water, saw Victoria and panicked. Bella hit her head on the rocks and was knocked out. She floated down further and Edward appeared upside down beside her. My third favorite song was playing during this scene; Slow Life by Grizzly Bear and I swear it got me again. The tears were flowing yet again. Jake grabs her arm and pulls her out, washing away the Edward apparition.
- While Edward is in Brazil he learns from Rosalie that Bella is dead and he sets his plan in motion to go to Italy.
- Alice returns to Forks and tells Bella what Edward is planning to do. Bella doesn't hesitate for a second and agrees to go save him.
- They barely make it in time to Volterra; Bella literally saves Edward from stepping out in the sun with seconds to spare.
- Their reunion is sweet but too short for my tastes. I wanted to see Edward light up like the sky just opened up for him; seeing Bella standing in front of him should have put him over the moon.
- Any scenes with Aro and the rest of the Volturi were great. Michael Sheen is fantastic as Aro. Too bad he didn't have a bigger role because he really gave me the creeps. I mean that in the highest regard and respect. Dakota Fanning as Jane was also good; her red eyes and her mind power really made her a force to be reckoned with.
- The fight scene between Edward and Felix was great. Edward flipping Bella upside down when he realized Felix was coming after her was exciting for me. Even though Felix was throwing Edward around like a damn rag doll with Bella screaming for him to stop, I appreciate the effort for action.
- They showed them able to walk freely out of the Volturi lair, going down a hallway with "tourists" walking by heading to the very room they escaped from. Then you hear the screaming and Bella looks horrified, Edward and Alice rush her through another set of doors then BOOM! Back in Forks. Nice. No plane ride or anything, just magically appears like that.
- Edward asking Bella to forgive him in her bedroom was touching. You can see the pain in his face over the mistake of leaving her. They kiss and she gets upset that he refuses to turn her into a vampire. Bella gets up and goes over to the Cullen house for The Vote.
- Everyone except for Edward and Rosalie say yes.
- Bella and Edward almost literally run into Jake while driving down the road. Jake wants to talk with Edward. Not a good sign. They exchange words and Jake gets upset because he thought Edward was speaking for Bella. He tries grabbing her arm and Edward shoves him backwards, which results in Jacob flipping back into wolf form. They stare each other down but Bella gets in between them yelling if they hurt each other, they would be hurting her. Jake looks at her pleading and you can see the defeat in his eyes and lowers his head and runs away.
- Edward tells Bella his one condition to turning her himself is that she needs to marry him.
- "Marry me, Bella"
- The End. Perfect way to lead into Eclipse.
